Contemporary Extension in Kennford, Devon

This carefully considered scheme transforms an existing chalet bungalow into a refined contemporary family home, while respecting the original hipped roof form and character of the property. The extension takes cues from the existing roofscape, reflecting its traditional geometry with a modern architectural twist. Clean gutter detailing, contemporary dormers and simple, elegant forms are combined with traditional materials to create a design that feels both familiar and fresh. A key part of the proposal was to work intelligently with the existing structure. By utilising the original structural valleys from the existing dormer arrangement, the design helps reduce unnecessary construction complexity and associated costs, while still delivering a significant improvement to the home. The new roof form incorporates stepped overhangs, allowing the extension to sit comfortably within the existing building composition. The result is a balanced and thoughtfully detailed addition that enhances the appearance, performance and usability of the property. Designed around family living, the project creates a more generous, practical and enjoyable home, offering improved space, comfort and lifestyle while retaining the charm of the original chalet bungalow.
